Objectives

SMArT develops its research activities in a holistic way in the field of architectural technology. This includes construction processes and materials as well as energy efficient installations and renewable energies, with a focus on industrialization and circular economy, environmental conditioning and performance. GAT works on the innovation in building design and products at the level of patents, prototypes, new construction and refurbishment as well as strategic transition planning towards a low-carbon society.

CONSTRUCTION

This area includes construction processes in the field of architecture, from manual on-site processes to automized processes of industry. We work on different materials, from local, traditional ones to waste, new constructive solutions, more sustainable, energy efficient products and the Integration of renewable energies. A specific focus lies on timber construction, modularity, industrialization and prefabrication as strategies for a reduced carbon footprint. Further fields of knowledge are the different stages of construction from core and shell work to finishing’s, tensile structures, as well as mass-housing and industrialized school buildings

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability in the field of Architectural Technology is a broad concept. It refers to the life cycle of materials, components and whole buildings as well as energy efficiency, embodied energy of materials and constructive solutions, taking into consideration environmental, economic and social impacts.

This holistic view on construction and technology is closely linked to the concepts of Sufficiency, Circularity and Efficiency, in the framework of emerging fields like the Circular Economy, the Renewable Energy Transition as well as the Decarbonization and Dematerialization of our construction industry and production and consumption systems in general. We work on strategic transition projects in these fields towards a low-carbon society.

ENERGY

Energy efficiency is a broad concept which englobes the design and implementation of passive and active building technologies as well as the use of renewable energy sources. Objective of our activities is the achievement of nearly zero energy buildings or even energy positive ones, guaranteeing comfort and health for users under cost optimal criteria. This area focuses on new build as well as deep refurbishment, with experience in the development of energy self-sufficient prototype housing, studies on energy storage, and research on new energy management models.

LIGHTING

Lighting is essential part of architecture, influencing human well-being and energy consumption of our buildings. We have extensive experience in natural and artificial lighting design, product design and prototyping of technological innovations. Our field of expertise is the lighting of all type of interior spaces, exterior lighting of architecture and urban spaces, monuments, landscapes as well as artistic lighting projects. We focus on energy efficient technologies, perfectly integrated in space and architecture, guaranteeing maximum comfort, wellbeing and delight.
